A3. SAMPLE LEARNING
Sample Learning Activity
One way to demonstrate educational technology in the classroom is through an instructional learning activity sample. For this example, students are in 5th grade and have been working through grammar rules in their language arts class. Students are learning the differences between nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and other parts of speech.

ISTE Standards

Based on the ISTE Standards for Students, the instructional design of this lesson involves two main areas: Empowered Learner and Digital Citizen (ISTE, n.d.).

Within Empowered Learner, the standard shown is, "1B. Students build networks and customize their learning environment in ways that support the learning process" (ISTE, n.d.). Through this lesson, students demonstrate their knowledge by creating Kahoot! questions. Students will use instructional material and create personalized questions.

Within Digital Citizen, the standard shown is, "2B. Students engage in positive, safe, legal, and ethical behavior when using technology including social interactions online or when using networked devices" (ISTE, n.d.). Through this lesson, students will work together in teams to work through an educational technology game. Students must collaborate, demonstrate knowledge of Kahoot! rules, and participate accordingly.

Grammar Formative Assessment

To check student understanding, the teacher can create a formative assessment in the form of an online Kahoot! game in which the questions asked are aligned with the grammar topics students are currently learning. Kahoot! is an online, interactive game in which educators can create multiple choice questions and have students group into teams or play individually to answer and win points. This method of educational technology allows for the teacher to understand students' level of understanding of the topic and encourages students to view the learning material in an entertaining way. The teacher can either create a personalized quiz or edit an existing one made by other educators.
For this lesson, the teacher will have students will take control of their learning by having each student create one Kahoot! quiz question and answer. This method allows the game additional personalization and checks for student understanding of the main parts of speech.

Grammar Summative Assessment

Once students have worked through all grammar material and participated in a formative assessment through Kahoot!, students will then be asked to work through a summative assessment in the form of an end-of-unit grammar test. While the questions will differ from the Kahoot! game, the overall grammar topics and formatting will stay the same. This summative assessment will consist of two sections: multiple choice and underlining different parts of speech.

Using Student Data from Assessments

Based on both the formative assessment and the results from the summative assessment test, the teacher will have a variety of data to analyze student understanding. From this data, the teacher can see which parts of speech students are having difficulty with and work through a future lesson plan strategy to correct this misunderstanding. For example, if during the formative assessment students were unable to answer questions about adverbs, the teacher can use this data to prepare a future activity on adverbs. Another example would be if the data shows most students answered noun questions incorrectly, the teacher then has the knowledge to set aside future class time to go over nouns.
